Notes for Chapter 3. Varus, Carthage, 218 B.C.

  1. Description of Carthage. I take my description from sources including Lancel’s Carthage: A History, Charles-Picard’s Daily Life in Carthage, and Flaubert’s highly romantic novel Salaambo, which covers the rebellion of Carthaginian mercenaries following the First Punic War. Hannibal’s father, Hamilcar Barca, was called upon to put down the rebellion.
  2. Fabius Buteo’s declaration of war in Carthage. This tale is from Livy, XXI, 18.
